A dermafiller is a substance that is injected using very fine needles into the
mid-dermis layer of the skin to restore volume and to lift and smooth lines,
wrinkles and scars. The most common areas treated are the smile lines around the
nose and mouth, frown lines between the eyes, fore head lines, fine lines above
the mouth, and acne scars.
Dermafiller is also useful to add the volume to lips, chin, malar region and other facial
areas. Apart from wrinkles it can be used to rejuvenate the whole face by
putting them in to the dermis to give refreshed look. It is also helpful to lift
the sagging corners of the mouth!
What do dermal fillers do?
Dermal fillers are placed below the skin’s surface to diminish the depth of
facial folds and wrinkles, which begin to appear as the body ages and skin loses
elasticity and volume.
Types:
Dermal fillers can be roughly categorized into animal-based, human-based, and
synthetic-based gel formulations of varying denseness.
They can have either temporary or permanent effects. Temporary fillers are
absorbed by the body over time, usually in 4-6 months and require repeated
treatments to maintain the effect.
They are manufactured in various formulations containing substances such as
Hyaluronic acid, human or animal collagen, microspheres, and local anesthetics.
Depending on the formulation and the injection site, the cosmetic effects of
dermal fillers are usually temporary - lasting from as short as four month to
just over a year. In general, follow up injections require less dermal filler
and the effects become longer lasting with repeated treatments.
How it works?
There are two types of wrinkles: dynamic wrinkles and static wrinkles.
Dynamic wrinkles are caused by contraction of muscles that are attached to the
overlying skin. Each muscle contraction causes the skin to bunch together,
forming lines between the bulk of the muscle. The most common locations for
dynamic wrinkles are between the eyebrows, across the forehead, and on the
cheeks near the outer corners of the eyes, referred to as “crow’s feet”. It
follows, then, that weakening these muscles will cause a reduction in the
severity of the facial wrinkles, or can prevent them altogether when muscle
weakening is done before wrinkles form. A dynamic wrinkle treatment is injection
of Botox into specifically targeted muscles to temporarily decrease the muscle
action for approximately 4-6 months, preventing wrinkle formation.
Static wrinkles are due to lack of elasticity of the skin caused from sun
damage, smoking, genetics, poor nutrition, or from prolonged dynamic wrinkling.
Static facial wrinkles are visible regardless of muscle contraction; they stay
(hence the name “static”) even when the muscles are not contracting. Over the
period of the times static wrinkles are converted in to folds. It is often due
to sagging of the underlying facial structures, most notably causing the deep
grooves between the nose and mouth known as the naso-labial groove (Laugh
Lines).
Derma fillers will be helpful to smoothen out such static wrinkles or folds. It
is injected into the skin with a very thin needle. It camouflages the wrinkles
temporarily by plumping up the groove from beneath. It restores the natural
volumes underneath the wrinkle.
All of this takes about 30 minutes, leaves no marks or scars, and the results
can be seen immediately.
Risk:
Some common injection-related reactions might occur after dermafiller injection;
they typically resolve spontaneously within one or two days after injection. These
reactions include redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising or tenderness at the
injection site. Inflammatory reactions may last for up to two weeks in rare cases.
After a lip enhancement, your lips may be swollen for several days. Patients should
discontinue aspirin and other blood thinners, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
(NSAIDs), vitamin E, and alcohol prior to therapy.
